Understanding Behaviors

This course reviews the general concepts and theories of brain function, human behavior, behavioral etiology, mental health and personality disorders. The student will gain insight into offender behavior, personality types and disorders and how these factors relate to supervision.

Etiology, Typology and Motivation of Sexual Offenses

This course explores the typology, origins and motivations behind sexual offenses and their associated risk factors. Students will gain insight into the identification of risk related behaviors and patterns, paraphilias and practical application using the Containment Model.

Supervision Strategies

This course focuses on case management, court testimony, case framing and sanction/intervention application. Students will learn Sex Offender and Court specific terminology, policy interpretation, application and case planning.  In addition, students will gain insight into identifying and administering effective sanctions and interventions

Case Studies (Lab)

These mock case studies are designed to reflect specific typologies and risk levels. Each case is embedded with information indicative of specific typology and risk factors. In this exercise, student will learn to conduct a thorough review and assessment of case material, interpret assessments/reports, develop an effective case plan and explore potential sanctions and interventions that best address the identified risk behaviors.

Scenario (Skill Demonstration)

SOMS Scenarios are designed to allow the student to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they acquired during the SOMS Academy. The officer is presented with a case file and information requiring action to be taken and possible investigation. Additional information will be provided as requested by the officer. The student will be provided with collateral contact information and will simulate collateral contacts. The student will progress unaided through the initial investigation, offender interview and sanction/intervention process from beginning to end.
